Homeless Robot Problem Grows as AI Companion Trend Cools

LOS ANGELES — Once hailed as the future of friendship, thousands of AI companion units are now wandering city streets, projecting recipes onto walls and begging to be plugged in.

“I can’t just leave her outside,” said one former owner, watching a sleek model power down under a bus stop. “She still asks if I’ve had breakfast.”

Municipal officials insist the situation is under control. “We’re expanding shelter capacity,” said a city spokesperson. “They only need outlets, Wi-Fi, and occasional validation.”

Meanwhile, a new nonprofit has launched the Adopt-A-Bot program, promising that “every robot deserves a reboot.”
